Harry Potter Time!

All right, so when I made this blog, I swore to myself I wouldn’t review Harry Potter. And I still won’t. It’s not that I don’t love the books, cause I do, it’s just that I know I won’t have anything extra to say on top of the millions of other reviews and word-of-mouth conversations that will be going around.

Still, thanks this this week’s Publisher’s Weekly children’s book newsletter (sign up if you want free book news every week), I’ve got a couple of good links I’d like to share about the new books and movie adaptations in general.

Books to Movie Adaptations - The Mercury An excellent set of observations about adapting books into movies, focusing on the new Nancy Drew movie but also looking at Harry Potter and other movie/book combos over the years.

From the Article: “Nel’s paper compares adaptation to translation: The job is to preserve the intent of the original, not necessarily its events.”
That pretty much sums up how I feel about books to movies - I don’t want it to be exact, but I want it to feel like the original.  Of course, I’ve been an X-Men fan for long enough that I’ll take anything that doesn’t totally suck -_-.

“Die if you must, Harry. It might be good for all of us.” Denver Post article about Harry’s rumored death and what it might mean to children readers. The article also discusses the long history of death in literature, from the death of Little Nell (The Old Curiosity Shop) to Charlotte (Charlotte’s Web). This article did spoil me on the end of the Narnia series though, as I apparently never knew what actually happened to the children.

Creating the Magic Moment  Time Magazine gives us a look at all the secrecy and work that goes into the creation of that magic moment at midnight when children and adults alike open Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for the first time. Keeping the spoilers from leaking only enhances that midnight magic, but it’s still a tough job when a copy would go for good money on e-bay.

How Other Writers Would End Harry PotterCurious how Meg Cabot might end the HP books? Well, read up!

Okay, before I sat down to write this, I was looking forward to the book, but now I’m just downright excited about it.  Enjoy your Harry Potter midnight magic!

(Oh, and I saw the movie yesterday and personally I thought it was the best so far. I’d heard that it was designed more towards adult audiences, and I agree. The movie flowed very well and didn’t cut anything too major. Plus, come on, Fred and George’s great escape is there! The only thing I was dispointed in was not seeing Lily in Snape’s worse memory, though they added some bits that seemed important for the future.)

  1. Yeah! I felt the same way about the movie–loved it. But Snape’s Worst Memory scene was like summarized in three little flashes. That was an improtant part–they could have fit the whole thing in.

  2. I wanted to see Lily -_- I mean, I’ve heard if you look really fast you can see her, but yeah. I wanted more. Now I’m wondering there is anything extra in there from the Prince’s Tale chapter in 7. I need a copy I can slow down and go frame by frame on. Though I’m betting someone on the big fan sites as has already done that.
