More books to threaten to smother me in my sleep…

This may be a short lived experiment, but I’ve decided to list new books when I buy them. Of course, I may just look at two weeks worth of new books, realize how quickly I’m gonna go broke, and abandon this whole idea.  Still, its worth a try.

So I went to Powell’s Books today. For those of you that aren’t in the NW, Powells is a glorious store that shelves new books beside used copies, so you can often get a lot of books for a decent price (as well as sometimes find ARCs or foreign copies of popular books).  The store takes up a good sized city block with four stories of books, plus a few more locations around town. Luckily, I don’t get a chance to just browse in there very often, I’m usually just on my way in and out to get a specific book, but I had some time to kill today.  Thus, my newest purchases:

Dilbert #29 – It’s an addiction. Seriously, I have far too many comic strip collections: Dilbert, Baby Blues, Fox Trot, Get Fuzzy, Zits, and Sherman’s Lagoon all crowd the bookshelf in my bathroom. Yes, I have a bookcase in my bathroom. Only one shelf is books, the others are baskets of various bathroom related things, but still.  I think that’s probably something I shouldn’t be admitting. Most expensive book purchased today. ($12.95)
Inda by Sherwood Smith – Besides Dilbert, the only new book that I got. I really love Sherwood Smith’s Crown Duel, and I also enjoyed her Wren books, so I’d been wanting to get her newest book for a while. Alas, I could not afford the hardcover, but the paperback shall be good reading. ($7.99)
Beast by Donna Jo Napoli – A retelling of Beauty and the Beast from the Beast’s perspective, and it has interested me for a while. At $2.95, even if it just sits on the shelf for six months, I’m not losing much.
Spinners by Donna Jo Napoli – Retelling Rumplestiltskin. Even if its bad, at $2.50, it can’t be all that bad.
Goose Chase by Patrice Kindl – There is a goose on the cover. The goose is wearing a crown.  How could I resist?? Seems to be about a goose girl who is made beautiful by a witch in disguise. It could other be hilarious and fun, or it could fall short of its potential. Oh well, again, $2.50.
The China Garden by Liz Berry – Tragic mysterious pasts and romance. At $3.95, it seemed like it had some good promise.

And just show that I have some restraint, a quick list of the books I wanted but didn’t buy (primarily because they were hardcover):
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman - paperback, but they only had new copies and I already wanted Inda.
Stardust by Neil Gaiman – the illustrated version. It costs $20 for the cheapest, $40 for the collector’s edition.
Star-Crossed by Linda Collison – something about this book just screamed out at me when I glanced at the spine on the shelf. The cover looks fascinating and the plot summary intrigued me. Still, I’m trying to be more cautious with my hard cover purchases. Too often I buy a book on impulse and then let it sit on the shelf for months (and by then its hit paperback anyways).
Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George – I’ve already decided that I’m going to either love or hate this book passionately. I’m afraid, despite reassurances from Miss Erin that it is good, that it’ll be too similar to Patricia Wrede’s Enchanted Forest Chronicles to escape comparison, but not good enough to actually be on par with them.
British Editions of all the Artemis Fowl books – they had all the British covers. And the British covers are just cool.

  1. Spinners and Goosechase are fabulous. I really want to read Patrice Kindl’s “Owl in Love”.

  2. Well, Dragon Slippers is an OK book, but it reminded me of The Goose Girl in some ways. That was the problem for me, because then it seemed like I already knew the whole book ,and it felt like I read it all already… but I still believe The Goose Girl is much better than Dragon Slippers ;)

  3. It always drives me crazy when I’m reading a book (or likewise, watching a tv show/movie, or playing a video game) and I just can’t help but think “You know, I could be reading *that book* instead.” Its especially bad when it’s the sequel to a book you loved, and you can stop thinking that you could be reading the original instead.

Goose Chase looks pretty amusing - I’ve started reading through the first few pages whenever the computer is loading and such. I’ve got a pile of books around my computer for that purpose.

  4. I hate you :-) I want to go to Powells…I could so get into sooooo much trouble there…my cleared credit card might not be so cleared…but just think of the books I could get…*sigh*

PS is there any new baby blues book? could you bring them with you?

  5. You know, if you moved out here, you could go to Powells whenever you wanted… ^_^

I’ll check for more Baby Blues - I think there is at least one that you haven’t read yet, if not two.
