One Year Aniversary Contest!

Wow, it’s been a whole year since I started this blog. It’s truly been a great year, and I love all the readers who’ve made me feel like I’m contributing something back to the literary community I love. So, in honor of the anniversary, I’m going to have a contest!

The prizes? Well, books of course!

I’ve got three signed copies of Cybele’s Secret by Juliet Marillier, the sequel to Wildwood Dancing, that I’m going to be giving away. Now this book isn’t available in the US until Fall 2008, so winning one here is hopefully easier and cheaper than ordering it from Australia (though if you don’t win, I highly encourage you to try to get a hold of it). Why this book you might ask? Well, because Wildwood Dancing originally inspired me to start this blog a year ago, and it only seems fitting that its sequel should be part of the anniversary celebration.

So, in order to win, you need to answer two questions:

1) What review do you remember the most from this last year and why? Be it the book you just had to go out and buy or the one where you completely disagreed with me, let me know that my reviews have made some kind of impact. ^_^

2) In Cybele’s Secret, at one point after completing an assortment of trials, Paula and her companions are told they can take any treasure in a room full of riches. Not all the riches are of a monetary value, for this room could contain things like the quilt your great-grandmother stitched as she crossed from the Old Country to the New. Or perhaps a book from your childhood that you remember fondly, but have never been able to find a copy of. Of course, it also contains treasures of ruby and gold. What would you take and why?

My answer to the second question is rather ordinary unfortunately—I’d take something of enough value to allow me to start my publishing company in the next few years (and it’d be nice not to worry about bills for a while). More than anything, I want to be able to share stories with the world, but starting my own company will take a lot of time, money, and energy. Sadly, I’m more of a practical than sentimental person. …Unless my childhood dog was in that room, she just might beat out the practical side of me.

And just in case you think you’re afraid someone else will have a much cooler answer than you, only two of the books will go the two best answers. The third will be determined by the luck of the draw, from the pool of all entrants. I may give out more prizes as well, other books that I love, depending on how many people enter (and what I can find used at Powell’s… I mean, well-loved.)

Don’t worry if you’re new to my reviews, just look through them and let me know what you like, even if you’ve just been reading since today. I’ll give you a hint, when it comes to picking out the two answers, more wait is given to the second question. I just want to know what you like (and don’t like) about my reviews, so I can make things even better in the coming year!

*Changed* Contest ends November 4th–spread the word and let your friends know!

E-mail your answers to crichoux@gmail.com. Please put “Bookwyrm Chrysalis Contest” in the subject line, just incase anything ends up in the spam folder by accident.

  10. I am excited, Marillier is one of my favorite authors. I looked at your review list and there are several of my well enjoyed books on there, but iwas wondering if you had read The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman by Louise Plummer? This is a funny book that pokes fun at romance a little..a romantic comedy.

  11. Ash–That does look like a fun book. I’ll have to add that to me reading list. Thanks for the recomendation.

  12. yay i sent it. i finally sent it! hope u like it *g* ^^. anyway, any news about how many people are competing, i wanna stay up-to-date *hehe*

  13. coz of you (crichoux) i found many good books. i’m dying to read them. for example The Book Thief (markus zusak). i know i know, u didn’t write a review on that one that’s exactly what i was trying to explain! for example dragon slippers, max. ride, bloody jack seemed to be good stories, so i also looked up the reviews in other pages…that’s when i came across Book Thief. I haven’t read it yet, BUT it’s going to be awesome. The story is set during WW2. At first I also thought: Huh? another Holocaust-story? …But i think it’s going to be really interesting, since it’s told from the point of view of Death. Yah, you heard correctly…Death is the narrator.

  14. There are now 12 entries, as of tonight.

Oh, Book Thief… thats a book that has tempted me before. I’ve always been intrigued by the holocaust to begin with–well, the human stories during it–and that sounds like a good book. You’ll have to let me know how you like it.

  15. Re: Book Thief

I heard really great things about The Book Thief, so I checked it out of the library. I was actually blown away. There were a couple things that took a bit of getting used to (Death interjects frequently, e.g.), but the characterizations were lovely, and the story was awesome.

Just a warning: because the book is narrated by Death, and because it takes place during WWII, expect a lot of death. Near the ending I actually sobbed. Not a bit teary-eyed, but actual snotty-could-barely-read-because-I couldn’t-see-through-my-tears-sobbing. But it was a good sobbing, because it meant that I actually cared about the characters that much.

This book is sooooo worth it.

  16. Re: Book Thief

Wow, thats a pretty powerful book then. I’m guessing you need to be in the right mood to read it then–like reading it right after you cat has just died is probably a no-no. Buts great the writing is that powerful and connects so well with the reader.

  17. Re: Book Thief

The Book Thief is one of my favourite books. It was touching and completely beautiful. The characters are realistic and completely easy to sympathise and understand with. I first checked it out of the library but eventually bought it. To me, it’s just one of those books that I have to reread. If you haven’t read it, then you totally should!

  18. it was…well it really touches one heart in many scenes throughout the book. For example how Liesel hugs Max. And after that how Liesel finds her present from him. But i think i gotta read i once more, coz there are many things i didn’t quite understand!

  19. @all: any other books you recommend (other than book thief!!)

  20. When will we know who wins the wonderful book of Juliet Marillier ? Also, you all intrigued me with The Book Thief, I think I should read it. It seems awesome !

  21. Also, I would like to know if you have received my submission ? It’s been a while since I send it but I just want to be sure I’m in the contest !

  22. I sent my submission by email, did you receive it ?
