Some non-YA fantasy books worth reading

Finals are over and the reviews are back! Sorry about the absence, finals kicked my butt. Had to write a long paper on copyright law and fan fiction. I think the end result was relatively interesting and readable, so I plan to post it on my site at some time in the future.

While I try to get back to writing reviews, I’d like to give you two good books to read that aren’t YA fantasy.

The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson
I previously reviewed Ibbotson’s book A Countess Below Stairs, and this book is a lot like that one. A sweet romance book, set against a gorgeous historical setting, The Morning Gift tells the story of a young Jewish woman escaping Vienna as the Nazi’s invade. In order to escape, she enters a marriage of convenience with a friend of the family, a young British professor. Though they keep their marriage a secret, life is complicated as the marriage proves difficult to annul and feelings begin to develop.

This book was more interesting to me than Countess, as the characters were more thoroughly developed. Something about the story just resonated with me, maybe because I seem to be a sucker for WWII romances. I highly recommend this book for those who love a cute romance.

The Heather Wells Mysteries (Size 12 is Not Fat, Size 14 is Not Fat Either, Big Boned) by Meg Cabot
This is a murder mystery series by Meg Cabot and one of her adult book series. The stories follow former pop star Heather Wells, who works at a dormitory where people just seem to keep dying. Each murder affects her personally, as co-workers and students die, and she just can’t seem to keep away. Complicating her life is the fact that she lives with her ex-pop star boyfriend’s very hot private investigator brother. Plus, she’s put on a few pounds and keeps hearing “You look like that singer, ‘cept fatter.”

If you like Cabot’s teen books, I highly recommend this one. Her adult books really are her teen books with grown-up characters, though I love the use of mystery in these. It adds a level of complication to the normal chick-lit story. I can’t seem to find any information about the continuation of the series, but I really hope Big Boned is the last book, because it ends nicely, in the same way that the first three Princess Diaries books are an independent trilogy.

  1. I really love Eva Ibbotson’s books and you can never go wrong with Meg Cabot. Have you checked out her blog? She posts almost every day and it usually cracks me up! :-)

  3. Oops…I mean: “looking forward to YOUR *long paper*….typo : )

  4. Glad to know there is some interest in the copyright paper ^_^ Personally I think its a fascinating topic. Of course, being the *smart* person I am, I forgot to bring it with me to my parents house for christmas, so I haven’t been able to edit on it. Hopefully when I get back it shouldn’t take me too long to get it into readable shape, though I need to incorporate some suggestions from my teacher. I also have a really good paper on the history of young adult book covers that I keep meaning to post someday -_-.
